Police say man with knife was shot and killed by officers
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A man with a knife was shot and killed Monday after he charged police officers in a northeast Georgia college town, the police chief said.
Officers responded just after 12:30 p.m. to calls about "a man who was armed with a knife, covered in blood and acting erratically," Athens-Clarke County police Chief Cleveland Spruill said at a news conference that the department streamed on Facebook.
When officers arrived, the man was still armed and the officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife, Spruill said. The man didn't obey them and the officers continued to give orders while retreating, Spruill said.
At one point, the man charged at the three officers and two of them fired at him, Spruill said. The man fell to the ground. He was immediately treated by paramedics but died from his injuries, Spruill said.
Police aren't releasing the man's name until his family is notified, but Spruill said he was an Asian man in his 20s. Police believe the blood on the man was his own and haven't located any other victims, Spruill said.
The shooting happened at River Club. The private complex says on its website it was specifically designed for University of Georgia students. Spruill said the man didn't live at the apartment complex and wasn't a UGA student.
According to department policy, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to look into the shooting, and the officers involved were placed on administrative leave.
GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said Monday's shooting is the 39th officer-involved shooting the agency has been requested to investigate so far this year.
