Officers involved in 2023 Short North shootings will not face charges

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Columbus police officers that fired shots in response to last year’s shootings in the Short North will not face charges.

The Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that none of the officers that fired shots on May 6, 2023 in the Short North will face charges. Columbus police did not reveal the identities of the officers that responded to the two simultaneous shootings that left at least 10 people shot, one of them by an officer.

Monday marks one year since multiple people were shot in the Short North, prompting months of heightened security measures. With Ohio State graduation, art shows, and street festivals this past weekend, Columbus residents and visitors got to see first hand the latest security measures in the Short North.

The first shooting on May 6, 2023 occurred at 2:33 a.m. Saturday at 624 N. High St. As multiple officers responded to that area, CPD said a second “explosion of gunfire” rang out at 847 N. High St. Three officers there were trying to break up a fight involving multiple people on the sidewalk, and returned fire, hitting at least one person.

In total, Columbus police Chief Elaine Bryant said investigators recovered 11 firearms from the Short North shootings.
