A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was involved in the fatal shooting of a female driver in Round Rock on Friday following a traffic chase, a DPS official said.

The woman has not yet been identified, said Deon Cockrell, the DPS spokesman.

The trooper shot her after she crashed her car shortly after noon near the Cracker Barrel restaurant at 2350 Interstate 35 North, close to the intersection with Old Settlers Boulevard, he said.

The woman was reported to be driving a stolen car, Cockrell said.

Round Rock resident Yuriy Semchyshyn said he was driving on Interstate 35 with his wife when the trooper pulled in front of him and jumped out of the car. Semchyshyn said he then saw the trooper shoot the woman in the chest while she was standing in front of the car with a cellphone in one hand and nothing in the other hand.

Cockrell said the woman had gotten out of the vehicle with a weapon. He declined to reveal details about the weapon.

The DPS trooper who shot her had tried to stop her when she evaded him, said Cockrell. The chase began on an I-35 access road near FM 1431, he said. The woman struck another car during the chase and ended up on a grassy area near the restaurant, Cockrell said.

He said the chase was brief and that only one DPS patrol car was involved in the chase, Cockrell said.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, he said.
