Officials caution residents after sewage spill into part of Lake Norman in Denver

Officials are asking people not to swim or touch the water in one part of Lake Norman in Denver.

In a news release, Lincoln County Health Director Lena Jones issued a Swimming Advisory at 11 p.m. Sunday for a sewage spill at Rivendell Lane. According to the director, about 900 gallons of untreated sewage may have leaked into Lake Norman behind Blue Dory Lane.

Jones said the spill happened after a sewer force main break. She added the flow has been stopped and officials have started testing the discharge site.

Residents and boaters in the area may be “contaminated with fecal coliform,” Jones said, and they are cautioned against swimming or touching the water as a precautionary measure.

The county posted No Swimming Advisory signs and sent a message to the properties affected.

Officials are taking water samples and said they will notify the public when residents can resume regular lake activities.
