Officials: Deputies kill Dripping Springs man who was wielding knife, wound 78-year-old woman

A Dripping Springs man who authorities said was wielding a knife was shot and killed by Hays County sheriff's deputies outside a home early Saturday. A 78-year-old woman also was wounded in the encounter.

The Hays County sheriff's office said deputies initially had responded to the 1300 block of Trinity Hills Drive in the Belterra subdivision, where a disturbance between a man and a wrecker truck driver was reported.

"A short time later, deputies responded to the 100 block of Victoria Court for a follow-up investigation related to the disturbance," the sheriff's office said in a statement Saturday. That's when a man, identified by the sheriff's office as 28-year-old John File, came out of the residence on Victoria Court, which is also in Belterra, and rushed at deputies with a knife, authorities said.

One of the deputies fired several rounds and shot File. A 78-year-old woman at the residence was shot in the arm, according to the sheriff's office. Authorities did not say how she was related to File.

Both File and the woman were taken to the hospital, where File was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m. The woman was being treated for her injuries, authorities said.

The Texas Rangers are assisting in the shooting investigation, which is standard policy when a deputy has used lethal force, according to the sheriff's office.
