Officials identify stabbing suspect killed by Gresham police at motel
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Authorities have identified a stabbing suspect who was fatally shot by Gresham police last week at the Golden Knight Motel as 29-year-old Carlos Corona.
On January 9 shortly after 8 p.m., Gresham police responded to a report from a 911 caller who said they heard a person screaming for help at the motel located on E Powell Blvd. A second caller reported they were a guest at the hotel and heard banging on their door. The occupant of the room was later attacked by a suspect, later identified as Corona, after officers saw him force his way into the room wielding a knife, police said.

The motel guest was stabbed multiple times as officers intervened amid the attack, with two officers firing shots at Corona. The victim received medical assistance from officers on the scene, was transported to a local hospital, and has since been released. Though officers said they also provided medical assistance to Corona, he died at the scene.
The involved officers have also been identified as Taylor Letsis and Gabriel Hoffman from the Gresham Police Department. Both officers have been placed on critical incident leave following the shooting, a standard procedure in these cases. Last week, Gresham PD said in a release that the involved officers were wearing body cameras but that the footage isn’t being released to the public yet.

On Wednesday, Gresham PD’s Detective Lindsay Friderich released the following statement about the attack:
“We are still investigating Mr. Corona’s motive for this violent attack. We would like to hear from anyone who recognizes Mr. Corona and had contact with him before this incident. When our investigation is complete it will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for review.”
The investigation into the incident is being led by the East Multnomah County Major Crimes Team. Officials said anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Gresham police tip line at 503-618-2719.
