Officials: Unarmed man slain by Liberty Hill officer after trespassing, getting into argument

A man was shot and killed by a Liberty Hill police officer on Wednesday after crashing his car and then arguing with a resident of a nearby home, officials said.

On Thursday, the man was identified as 21-year-old Jackson Lieber of Georgetown. Lieber was not armed when he was shot, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Deon Cockrell said.

Details about what led the officer to shoot Lieber were not yet available, Cockrell said Thursday.

Lieber was taken to a hospital, where he died Wednesday, said Cockrell. The officer involved in the shooting is Esteban Gomez-Sanchez, who was placed on administrative leave as is protocol, according to a Liberty Hill police news release.

Gomez-Sanchez, who has been with the Liberty Hill Police Department since December 2020, was not injured in the shooting that happened at 750 RM 1869, the release said. It did not say why Gomez-Sanchez shot Lieber.

The Texas Rangers, a division of the DPS, and the Williamson County sheriff's office are investigating the incident.

Lieber had been in a car that ran off a section of RM 1869 between Texas 29 and U.S. 183 in Williamson County, said Cockrell. The car, which also had another person in it, was disabled, the sergeant said.

Lieber left the car and walked up a dirt road alone to a nearby house, Cockrell said.

A resident asked Lieber to leave, but he refused and there was an altercation, said Cockrell. "He wasn't asking for help, and he wouldn't respond to the resident asking him to leave," Cockrell said.

Liberty Hill police officers responded at 2:43 p.m. to help the Williamson County sheriff's office with a call about a trespasser, officials said.

Cockrell said he could not provide details Thursday about what happened after the officer arrived.
