Offseason basketball coaching resignations leave openings at District 10 schools

With the high school winter sports season winding down, it's time for coaches to evaluate their situations.

Several boys basketball head coaches recently decided to step down for various reasons. The most popular reason recently among all sports is coaches having growing families and wanting to spend more time at home year-round.

Recent coaching resignations

Union City boys basketball coach Shawn Thompson just wrapped up his sixth season with the Bears and has stepped down. He went 65-71 in six years, which ranks third in program history for wins by a coach.

Kelley Ponsoll has resigned after a six-year stint with the Fort LeBoeuf boys basketball game. Ponsoll went 35-93 at LeBoeuf, which is tied for third in program history for most wins. Ponsoll also spent three years as the Union City head coach and has an overall record of 62-133.

Iroquois boys basketball coach Rob Meola resigned after five seasons with the Braves. Meola went 10-100 since taking over for longtime coach Brad Bresee.

Outside of Erie County, Wilmington boys basketball coach Robb Shimrack and Conneaut boys basketball coach Derek Thomas have also resigned. Thomas spent the past four years as the head coach of the Eagles and Shimrack spent the past three years with the Greyhounds.

Girls basketball position open

There is also one girls basketball job open right now as Girard recently posted its job. Heidi Kalicky, a senior on Girard's 1998 state championship team, took over during camp in November on an emergency basis after a late resignation by coach Pat Miller.
