Oh My Cupcakes is going mobile.

The food truck will debut to the public on Friday in downtown Sioux Falls during Fridays on the Plaza from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Oh My Cupcakes founder and CEO Melissa Johnson said that the new truck has the same flooring as the two physical locations, including white shiplap walls, flower walls and a chandelier.

"You have that entire feel of the shop itself," Johnson said. "... All the things you see inside at Oh My Cupcakes is what you're gonna see with the mobile experience, and I think that it's just so much fun that we put all of our heart and our intention and thought into it, and didn't just roll out a trailer."

Starting a mobile option has been an idea for the business dating back to 2017, Johnson said. The business initially opened in 2009 at 5015 S. Western Ave., and in 2019, added a second location on the east side of Sioux Falls. The business will celebrate 13 years in August.

"We've been working on it for a long time, but you know, timing is everything and we just really had the right team to put it together right now," Johnson said.

Along with getting the right team, Johnson said she's noticed a shift in consumer behaviors following the COVID-19 pandemic.

"People are used to things coming to them, whether it's a package that arrives on your front door, or food that's delivered to you, whatever the case may be, but people are certainly used to things coming to them, and traffic patterns definitely have changed. So we want to make sure that we are continuing to pivot and innovate and reach our guests wherever they are," Johnson said.

Along with serving customers in Sioux Falls, Johnson said the business is focusing on expanding its services to other towns in the area, including spots like Mitchell, Watertown and Okoboji, Iowa.

"We're excited about reaching some of those towns ... Some that are close, they know Oh My Cupcakes. They've heard of Oh My Cupcakes, but maybe it's not easy for them to come to us, so we want to go to them," Johnson said.

Not only will the business expand to local towns, but they also ship nationwide with experience boxes that include cupcake decorating kits and instructional videos.

The business will also be able to visit festivals, private events, weddings, fundraisers and corporate appreciation events, Johnson said. The food truck will offer a variety of cupcakes, Johnson said, including gluten-friendly and sugar-free options for people with various dietary restrictions.
