The fatal bus crash that left three high school band students and three adults dead may have been caused by traffic slowdowns related to another crash on I-70.

Another crash occurred on I-70 early on Tuesday. Slowdowns resulting from that crash appears to have caused the charter bus carrying the students to slow down as it was approach the affected stretch of highway.

We’ve made recommendations over the years and have given roadmaps to entities that haven’t been implemented. Thats the key, implementing the recommendations,” she said. “If I sound frustrated, it’s because I am.”

She said while she was at the site of the crash she could not help but think of the families affected by the tragedy, noting that she had a 15-year-old daughter. Katelyn Owens, one of the teens who died in the crash, was 15-years-old.

“You can’t not think about the children that were involved, their families, the concern parents at home may have had, this was really tragic, this was really serious crash,” she said.

What caused the bus crash?

Wednesday 15 November 2023 23:00 , Graig Graziosi

The exact cause of the bus crash remains unknown, but the National Transportation Safety Board said they are investigating the incident and will visit the crash scene on Wednesday.

A preliminary investigation report is due to be published in a few weeks, said Jennifer Homendy, chair of the NTSB. A more in-depth investigative report on the crash will not be ready for another 12 to 18 months.

While the incident is being investigated, questions remain over the safety of the charter bus, which belonged to Pioneer Trails, a bus company operating out of Millersburg.

The entity has a satisfactory safety rating, according to US Department of Transportation data. It has been involved in one other crash in the last 24 months that resulted in one injured person.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the business said it was cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the crash.

On average, four motorcoach passengers die in bus crashes each year in the US, 1999 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows.

And all I could see was her head and the rest was all crushed underneath seats.”

She said a student behind her was complaining that his legs were injured, and that anytime she attempted to free herself it would move the seats, causing him to cry out in pain.

“The kid behind me was complaining [about] his legs and I was trying to get out, but like I didn’t wanna crush him because anytime I moved the seats moved cause I was trying to get out and then he starts like screaming in pain,” Tori said. “The kid that was on the far right of the three, he was in the middle of the aisle and not moving.”

Tori eventually managed to escape the bus through a window.

Derek Varansky, the school district superintendent, called it the “worst day of his life,” as he addressed the vigil on Tuesday.

He added that the students who passed away were “bright lights, full of life and they lost their lives way too young.”

Meanwhile, Aaron Rae, pastor of the Bolivar Community Church, said he spent the afternoon with a boy from his church whose mother died in the crash.

“His innocence, his rose-colored glasses that he had of this world were removed when he sat in the living room and heard his dad share the news that Mom would not be coming home anymore. And that’s the news your students heard this morning,” he said.

“In Tusky Valley, even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death this evening, I’m encourage that you’ve come to love on each other,” he added.

Six candles were lit at the vigil, one for each of the victims.
