Ohio Easter 2020: Updated List Of Stores Open, Closed

CLEVELAND — Easter Sunday will be the first day off for many store employees who have been deemed as essential workers during the new coronavirus outbreak.

The holiday will also be the first day that multiple major stores will be closed in Ohio since the coronavirus crisis began in the United States.

On the one hand, companies are closing stores to allow employees to properly observe the religious holiday. However, it also allows some of the nation’s largest retailers to give their workers a much-needed day at home.

"Our team members have been working around the clock to provide a safe shopping environment for our guests and to ensure access to essential food, fuel and medicines, and we cannot thank them enough for their heroic efforts throughout this pandemic,” said Giant Eagle Spokesperson Jannah Jablonowski. “We thank our guests for helping us recognize our team members in this special way and encourage everyone in our communities to please keep these closures in mind as you plan your food, fuel and prescription needs next week."

Here are the stores that will be closed in our state on Easter Sunday:

  • Aldi

  • BJ’s

  • Costco

  • Giant Eagle

  • Publix

  • Sam’s Club

  • Sears

  • Target

  • Trader Joe’s

However, many stores are choosing to remain open April 12. Here are the retailers that have said they will be open for business on Easter Sunday:

  • Albertsons

  • CVS

  • Duane Reade

  • Giant

  • Kmart

  • Kroger

  • Rite-Aid

  • ShopRite

  • Walmart

  • Whole Foods

It’s still recommended to call your local stores for confirmation of hours.

Additionally, although some stores will be open on Easter Sunday, people should not forget safe social distancing practices as they celebrate the religious holiday during the stay-at-home order in Ohio.

One alternative to attending church in person is to view livestreamed or recorded services for Easter Sunday. For example, Pope Francis’ Holy Week celebrations, including Mass on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, will be livestreamed.

The Pope's Easter celebrations will be broadcast live on the Vatican Media YouTube channel.
