A day after shaking up the football divisional and regional assignments for the fall, the Ohio High School Athletic Association on Tuesday announced updated divisions for winter sports, including basketball, Tuesday morning.

Because basketball divisions include a competitive balance calculation, they are reassessed each year. The other winter sports – swimming, bowling, girls gymnastics, ice hockey and wrestling – have their divisions set through the 2023-24 season.

In girls basketball, a total of 120 schools (15.6%) moved across the four divisions. From the Columbus area, Centennial jumped to Division I due to competitive balance. Eastmoor Academy dropped to Division II due to enrollment, while KIPP Columbus and North Union moved up to Division II for the same reason.

Johnstown switched from Division II to Division III due to competitive balance, which was also the case in 2021-22. Tree of Life and East Knox moved up to Division III due to competitive balance. Utica and Columbus School for Girls both landed in Division III due to declines in enrollment.

Now in Division IV, Mount Gilead also moved down as a result of enrollment numbers.

There were 103 schools (13%) that saw changes in boys basketball. Both South and DeSales moved up to Division I due to enrollment. Whitehall-Yearling dropped to Division II as a result of competitive balance, while Johnstown moved up to Division II due to enrollment. Ready climbed to Division II as a result of competitive balance.

Horizon Science and Heath both moved down to Division III as a result of competitive balance and enrollment, respectively. Enrollment numbers also pushed Cardington, Grandview Heights and East Knox into Division III, while Grove City Christian and Tree of Life rose to Division III status due to competitive balance.

In Division IV, Northmor moved down due to competitive balance and Wellington moved down because of enrollment.
