Ohio hunters bagged fewer deer during this year's statewide gun hunting week

Nearly 8,400 white-tailed deer were bagged in Stark and surrounding counties during the statewide gun-hunting week.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife on Monday released the results. A total of 70,118 deer were harvested, a 2.5% decrease from last year (71,931). The hunt ended Sunday.

The three-year average during the seven-day gun season is 71,322, ODNR officials said.

Coshocton County, which also led the state last year, finished No. 1 with the most deer taken at 2,441. It was followed by Tuscarawas, Ashtabula, Muskingum, Knox, Carroll, Guernsey, Washington, Locking and Harrison counties.

Here's how Stark and surrounding counties finished, with the three-year average in parentheses:

  • Stark: 1,040 (970)

  • Carroll: 1,864 (1,777)

  • Columbiana: 1,464 (1,383)

  • Mahoning: 621 (589)

  • Summit: 210 (207)

  • Tuscarawas: 2,260 (2,240)

  • Wayne: 917 (882)

According to the wildlife division, hunters checked 25,044 antlered deer (36% of the harvest) and 45,074 deer without antlers (64%), which include does and button bucks. An additional deer gun-hunting weekend will be Dec. 16-17.
