Ohio man dead after crash on Massachusetts Turnpike in Auburn

AUBURN — A 23-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio, died after a three-vehicle crash Thursday morning on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Auburn, state police said.

A Sturbridge man was transported to the hospital, and three passengers of the Ohio man's car sustained minor injuries.

At approximately 7:25 a.m. Thursday, state troopers and Auburn firefighters and EMS responded to a crash on the eastbound side of the turnpike.

According to a statement from state police, a preliminary investigation indicated that a 2013 Mazda VST driven by the Ohio man was traveling on the highway eastbound when his vehicle sideswiped a 2020 Mazda CX5 driven by a 60-year-old man from Sturbridge, forcing it through the guardrail and down the embankment.

The Mazda VST then rear-ended a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by a 41-year-old woman from Rhode Island.

The Ohio man was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus, where he died from his injuries.

Three passengers in the Mazda VST were also transported to UMass Memorial with minor injuries. The Sturbridge man was transported to St. Vincent Hospital. The Rhode Island woman was uninjured.

The right and middle lane of the turnpike were closed for approximately three hours Thursday and all were reopened by around 11 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation by state police.
