Ohio man who died after falling from hotel balcony had leaned over railing, video shows

A tourist who fell from his hotel room’s balcony in September and died had leaned over the railing, according to a Myrtle Beach Police Department spokesman.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office had reported in October that Markell Hope, 34, had attempted a handstand when he fell to his death.

It is not clear what he was trying to accomplish, department’s spokesman Tom Vest said in a message Monday.

A video showed that Hope was also alone on the balcony when he went over the railing, according to Vest, who added that his death is being investigated as an accidental fall.

Hope fell from the 15th floor at the Patricia Grand Hotel on Ocean Boulevard.

The Ohio man died at at the scene around 2:30 p.m., according to the coroner’s report.

Vest said investigators are waiting on toxicology reports, and until they’re ready, the case is still open.
