Will Ohio residents be able to bet on Ohio State vs. Georgia if it lasts into Jan. 1?
Sports betting is coming to Ohio.
Starting Jan. 1, Ohio residents will be permitted to place bets on professional, college and esports, following in the footsteps of 32 other states which have already legalized such gambling.
On Dec. 31, Ohio State football will face Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia. With the game kicking off at 8 p.m., there's a chance that the No. 4 Buckeyes' matchup against the No. 1 Bulldogs extends into 2023.
That has many Ohio residents wondering at what point can people start placing bets on the Buckeyes using websites or mobile apps like Tipico, FanDuel and Draft Kings sportsbooks.
Will Ohio State fans be able to bet on the Peach Bowl if it lasts past midnight?
According to Jessica Franks, the Director of Communications at the Ohio Casino Control Commission: "If the OSU/Georgia Game goes past midnight, it is possible that individuals could place wagers on the game."
"However," she added, "each sportbook would determine whether it will accept wagers, and any offered must be in the Commission’s wager catalog."
As for the specific sports books, launch details vary.
Stephen Miraglia, Senior Director of Communications for DraftKings, said whatever the sportsbook has live at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1, Ohio residents will be able to bet on.
While Miraglia couldn't say whether that would include the Peach Bowl, he did point out that DraftKings is heading into its 22nd state launch and so believes it is "well versed in entering markets efficiently."
A BetMGM spokesman said that if the Ohio State vs. Georgia game is still going on Jan. 1, it will offer live betting on the game.
And FanDuel Vice President of Communications Chris Jones preferred not to say whether the sportsbook would have live betting available because it would be "hard to speculate" what event would be the first available for Ohio residents.
Ohio State will kick off the Peach Bowl as an underdog for the first time since the 2020 season, with Georgia opening as a 6.5-point favorite.
Bet For The Win managing editor Caroline Darney contributed to this report.
Editor's note: A previous version of this story misidentified Ryan Bonini as Tipico's Vice President of Sports Betting and iGaming Partnerships. He is, in fact, a liaison between Gannett and Tipico, and so a quote from him regarding the timeframe of whether the sportsbook will allow wagering on the Peach Bowl has been removed.
