JACKSON TWP. – State Sen. Kirk Schuring has told colleagues in Columbus he's on the mend at home — and plans to return to the Ohio Capitol, possibly in January.

The 71-year-old Republican had been in poor health with an undisclosed illness.

He recently spent a combined eight weeks in the hospital and in a rehab center, but now is rehabbing at home, according to a letter he sent this morning to the Senate and Canton Repository.

"Thanks for your thoughts and concerns during my absence from the Senate ... ," Schuring wrote. "Part of what I’ll be experiencing in the future is regular medical treatments that could cause me to experience some difficulty afterwards.

"I’m a fighter and I plan to be back at the Statehouse again hopefully sometime soon (possibly in January). Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated! I look forward to seeing you at the Statehouse and will be working hard to get there as soon as possible."

Schuring stated he would not comment further.

Senate President Matt Huffman, R-Lima, confirmed in late October that Schuring had been hospitalized and "had been battling complications from a recent setback in his health." Schuring, who is the second in command in the Senate, missed several voting sessions this year, including when lawmakers voted on the state budget bill.

Schuring in his 31st year in office, and represents the 29th District, which includes the bulk of Stark County.

His tenure makes him the second longest-serving lawmaker in either chamber. The most senior legislator is fellow Stark Countian, Rep. Scott Oelslager, R-North Canton, who serves the 48th district.

Oelslager and Schuring have effectively traded political seats in the House and Senate three times during elections in the past two decades.

Schuring was most recently elected to a four-year term in 2022, which runs through 2026.
