Ohio Senate race could have impact on future of abortion rights

Who Ohioans decide to vote into the Senate could determine the future of abortion rights in the country.
This election, Ohioans will choose if they want Republican J.D. Vance or Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan to represent the state in the Senate.
They will elevate Ohio in what is already a controversial national conversation.
Tuesday President Joe Biden said if Democrats elect more senators and keep control of the house in the midterm elections, he would work to codify Roe v. Wade — which the United States Supreme Court overturned in June.

“The only sure way to stop these extremist laws that are put in jeopardy women’s health and rights is for Congress to pass a law. And I’ve said before the court got [Roe v. Wade] right nearly 50 years ago and I believe Congress should codify [Roe v. Wade] once and for all,” Biden said.
Monday night Ryan called this “smart” during a debate with Vance in Ohio.
“Move us away from chaos and back to some stability,” Ryan said.
But Vance had a different approach.
“My basic view here is that we need to protect life in this country,” Vance said.
Early predictions highlight just how close this race is.
A new poll from Suffolk University shows Vance edging Ryan out by two points, a flip from a month ago.
An Emerson College poll shows Vance just barely in the lead, but with less of a gap than in September.
Ultimately, it’s not the polls but who goes to the polls with the loudest voices.
If Democrats maintain control of the Senate, the president will need more than a simple majority.
He needs 60 votes to codify abortion rights.
