Ohio State finishes fourth in final Directors’ Cup standings, best place since 2017
The Ohio State athletic department ended up fourth in the final Directors’ Cup standings for the 2021-22 academic year, its best performance in half a decade.
The Buckeyes finished behind Texas, which won the competition for the second consecutive year, as well as Stanford and Michigan.
The Directors’ Cup, presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, recognizes the nation’s most successful athletic programs. Points are given based on postseason performance.
The Buckeyes' best efforts included an NCAA championship won by the women’s hockey team and a national semifinal appearance by the men’s tennis team. They finished with 1,184.50 points, putting them behind ultimate winner Texas by 265 points.
OSU football, fencing and men's gymnastics were also in the top five of their sports.
Ohio State’s last top-five overall finish occurred when it wound up second in 2017 and 2016. It was ninth last year.
Stanford had captured the Directors’ Cup for 25 consecutive seasons before Texas took it last year for the first time. It was not given out in 2020 after the coronavirus pandemic led the NCAA to cancel winter and spring championships.
