What Ohio State is doing on the 2023 recruiting trail is not normal.

Both the Buckeyes football and men's basketball programs hold the No. 3 overall classes in the country according to 247Sports, while both currently are No. 1 in the Big Ten conference.

For coach Ryan Day and the football program, the No. 3 ranking meets expectations so far in 2023, bringing in three top-10 wide receivers in the class — Brandon Inniss, Noah Rogers and Carnell Tate — along with four-star offensive tackle Luke Montgomery, four-star defensive lineman Jason Moore and four-star tight end Jelani Thurman.

For Chris Holtmann and the men's basketball program, expectations have been raised on the recruiting trail.

After starting the recruiting class with four-star shooting guard George Washington III and four-star center Austin Parks, the Buckeyes secured commitments from from two four-star small forwards per 247Sports' composite rankings — Devin Royal and Scotty Middleton, who is listed as a five-star on ESPN. Ohio State now has three top-100 players in its 2023 class.

How unprecedented is Ohio State football, men's basketball's recruiting success?

In 2023, Ohio State is the only team in the running for top-10 classes in both football and men's basketball.

The only other program that is in the top-20 in both recruiting classes currently is Penn State, which is No. 10 for football and No. 19 in men's basketball.

Since 2013, only six teams have finished with a top-10 recruiting class in both football and men's basketball: Alabama in 2022 and 2017, Texas in 2022, 2018 and 2016, LSU in 2020 and 2013, Florida in 2019, Florida State in 2016 and Ohio State in 2022, 2015 and 2014.

Only Alabama in 2022, LSU in 2020 and Florida State in 2016 have finished with top-five recruiting classes in both football and men's basketball.
