COLUMBUS, OH — The Ohio State Buckeyes will play Clemson in the college football playoffs.

The two teams will square off on New Year's Day at 8 p.m. Buckeye fans will want to go easy on New Year's Eve to make sure they're up for the next day's game.

Joining the Buckeyes in the playoffs will be Alabama and Notre Dame. Since the playoff format launched in 2015, at least two of Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson have appeared in every final four.

The championship game will be played Jan. 11 in Miami, ESPN notes. The winners of Alabama versus Notre Dame and Clemson versus Ohio State will compete to be last team standing.

COVID-19 created a bizarre college football season. The Big Ten initially decided to not hold a football season, but as other major conferences perservered, school leaders reversed their decision. Ohio State began an abbreviated season on Oct. 24 and rattled off six wins, including a Big Ten championship, to punch their ticket to the playoffs.
