Ohio State University keeps last year's spot in new U.S. News college rankings

Ohio State University has once again cracked the top 50 for best universities in the country, as determined by U.S. News & World Report.

Its ranking unchanged from last year, Ohio State placed No. 49 out of 443 national universities, tying with the University of Georgia. It also tied with other schools as No. 24 for veterans and No. 54 for undergraduate teaching.

Other Greater Columbus schools saw their rankings rise in U.S. News & World Report, whose methods for determining its college rankings have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years.

  • Denison University: No. 39 in national liberal arts colleges (tie) (previously was No. 42)

  • Otterbein University: No. 9 in regional Midwestern universities (tie) (was No. 12)

  • Ohio Dominican University: No. 49 in regional Midwestern universities (tie) (was No. 64)

A few saw their ranking slip ever so slightly:

  • Ohio Wesleyan University: No. 111 in national liberal arts colleges (was No. 98)

  • Capital University: No. 39 in regional Midwestern universities (tie) (was No. 37)

  • Ohio Christian University: No. 127-166 in regional Midwestern universities (was No. 119-157)

How did other Ohio universities place on U.S. News & World Report college rankings?

Outside Columbus, these Ohio colleges ranked high in their respective categories:

  • John Carroll University near Cleveland tied with Missouri's Truman State University for the country's second-best regional university.

  • Baldwin Wallace near Cleveland tied with Minnesota's Augsburg University and Iowa's Dordt University, for the fourth-best college for undergraduate teaching among Midwestern universities.

  • Ohio Northern in Ada tied with Missouri's College of the Ozarks for the fourth-best regional college in the Midwest.

  • Case Western Reserve and OSU tied with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Washington for the country's fifth-best nursing program.

  • Baldwin Wallace also was ranked the third-best school for veterans, followed by Cedarville University in Greene County.
