Ohio teen apologizes, sentenced for baby's death

Brooke Skylar Richardson apologized to an Ohio courtroom for what she'd done. The young woman was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter charges tied to the death of her baby in May 2017.

Richardson was sentenced to a week in jail for gross abuse of a corpse. After she gave birth to the stillborn, she buried the body in the backyard of her family's house.

One of the prosecutors said that the case failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Richardson killed her baby.

Tracy Johnson, who would have been the baby's paternal grandmother, told the court, she would mourn every May, on the anniversary of the baby's birth.

The case divided the local community. The prosecution tried to argue that Richardson never wanted the baby in the first place, while the defense said she was scared and the baby was stillborn.
