Incumbent Republican Robert Sprague won his race for reelection as Ohio treasurer, according to unofficial election results.

Sprague, who served as a state representative and auditor of his hometown, had a 19-point lead over Democratic Marion Mayor Scott Schertzer as of 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday

Though the campaign for treasurer traditionally receives much less attention than other state contests, Sprague's victory further signals that Ohio is shifting from a purple swing state to reliably red.

Ohio's treasurer manages the investment of billions of state dollars, helps pick who manages our public pensions, and runs a number of programs aimed at helping families and small businesses.

"We really believe in this theme of using the power of finance to help families," Sprague told the USA TODAY Network Ohio Bureau during an interview.

Schertzer said it was great to see the campaign finally come to fruition, noting that even with the loss he didn’t regret the campaign his team put forth.

“Every candidate looks forward to election night. Every candidate hopes for a victory, but I will just tell you that when I entered this race in February, I knew that I was starting out late and it was a challenge to catch up, but I will also say that throughout this entire campaign I had a great time," he said. "I was glad to give Ohio voters a choice in this state treasurer’s race and that is what it’s all about is the choice."
