The one thing Butler County Democratic Party Chair Kathy Wyenandt got right in her column ("Republican Party molding Ohio into an authoritarian state," May 31) is when she said, "Ohio voters can reclaim their rights at the ballot box." However, the reason that Republicans have a supermajority in the Ohio Legislature is because they don't mirror the progressive policies she and the Democrats in Washington, D.C., push. Ohio voters are smarter than that.

Astounding hypocrisy from Governor DeWine

In the article "Group sues Ohio board over August ballot language for constitutional changes," Gov. Mike DeWine told reporters, "The concern is that people can come in, outside forces, outside the state of Ohio and spend a ton of money to try to impact that. The better process is frankly, through the legislative process."

My God, man! A political action committee (Save Our Constitution PAC) has been set up to push for the constitutional amendment requiring 60% voter approval for future amendments, before a vote on a reproductive rights amendment this fall. Most of this PAC’s funding − more than $1 million − is from Richard Uihlein, a billionaire Republican megadonor from Illinois.

DeWine has also said he would vote for the amendment.

I’ve come to expect blatant hypocrisy from Ohio’s GOP, but you, sir, are astounding.

Ohio should replicate Illinois' priest abuse investigation

As reported in the May 25 Enquirer ("New charges unlikely in Illinois abuse report"), yet another state has found, through an attorney general investigation, an astonishing number of unreported crimes of priest sexual abuse of children (450 priests, over 2,000 children). This is especially alarming for victims of priest sexual abuse such as myself here in Ohio for two main reasons: Illinois, for much of the tragic period of these atrocities, was the metropolitan jurisdiction of Chicago Archbishop Joseph Bernardin, who for many years held the same position of oversight and authority here in Cincinnati and throughout the state of Ohio; and our present Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has not conducted a similar investigation here in our state, which could uncover the full extent of this scandal and its cover-up here as well.

There is no logical reason to doubt the number of unreported cases was significant here too, since local Church leadership almost certainly followed the same practices, and in Cincinnati, it was for many years, in fact, the very same bishop.

Please, Mr. Yost, have the courage of so many of your fellow state prosecutors and once and for all uncover the full extent of this wounding of so many Catholic children, and of the Church itself.
