Ohio woman repeatedly charged by music service she’s not signed up for

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio (WCMH) – It was May 2023 when Washington Court House resident Molly Mickle first noticed an unusual charge on her monthly bank statement.

“It was a $9.99 charge from Spotify,” said Mickle.

Mickle insisted she never heard of Spotify, or signed up for a Spotify account, especially with the credit card that was charged.

“The last time I used my credit card was April of 2022,” Mickle said. “I never use my credit card. I’m one of those people, I pay cash or check as I go along.”

Mickle took the issue to her bank, disputed the charge, and got a new card with a new number.

“And within probably a week to 10 days, Spotify had done it again,” said Mickle. “Here’s another $9.99 charge.”

Mickle went back to her bank, disputed the charge, and got a new card with a new number, but was charged by Spotify again. And Mickle said the charges continued for months, even increased to $10.99, after she activated new credit cards.

“Every time I get a new credit card, Spotify goes in, and they charge it,” Mickle said. “I mean, I’ve gone through seven credit cards since May.”

Mickle said her bank didn’t hold her responsible for the charges, but she never got an answer from the institution or Spotify as to why this happened.

Did she unknowingly sign up for the music service? Or worse — did someone hack into her bank account?

“If somebody got my credit card now, are they going to use it for something else?” Mickle said.

That’s when Mickle called Better Call 4. Unfortunately, NBC4 didn’t get much of an answer either. After a little more research, it was found that Mickle isn’t the only person with this exact problem — at least, according to Reddit.

And the only solution appears to be dealing with Spotify directly. Although tired of dealing with it, Mickle also took matters into her own hands.

“I didn’t ask for a new card, I don’t want no new card. I’m done,” Mickle said. “I just think people need to know, and really to look at your charges.”

Additionally, NBC4 could not find any information on if Mickle’s bank or Spotify experienced a data breach that would lead to those charges.
