Ohioans Have Until Dec. 1 To Renew Their Expired License
OHIO — The COVID-19 grace period for expired licenses and vehicle registrations is coming to an end.
Ohioans will have until Dec. 1 to renew all of their relevant licensing and registration. The Ohio BMV is urging people to renew their vehicle registration online and to only go into a BMV to renew their license or ID card.
"Please know things might look a little different at your local BMV and staff will be enforcing social distancing and facial covering requirements for everyone's safety," the BMV said on its website.
While Ohioans will still eventually need to get a federally-compliant Real ID, the Department of Homeland Security pushed back the Real ID deadline to October 2021 because of COVID-19. Real ID will eventually be necessary for domestic air travel and for getting onto military bases or secure federal facilities.
The Ohio BMV released a list of federally-compliant or standard ID papers to bring for a renewal. Ohioans can also "get in line online" before heading to a physical location.
When Ohioans do want to get their Real ID, they'll need to provide documented proof of their full legal name, their date of birth, their legal presence in the U.S., their Social Security number, their Ohio street address (with two different sources), and proof of a name change (if applicable). A list of acceptable documents to fulfill these requirements has been shared by the Ohio BMV.
