OHSAA computer ratings update: Whitmer, Findlay among teams that would host playoff games
Sep. 29—As the second half of the high school football season kicks off this weekend, schools are looking to solidify their playoff positions with many hoping to lock up first-round home games.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its official weekly football computer ratings on Tuesday. The top 16 teams in each region of the seven divisions will make the playoffs.
The higher seeded team will host first and second-round playoff games, instead of only the first round, before neutral sites are used beginning with the regional semifinals. In the first round, the No. 16 seed will play at the No. 1 seed, the No. 15 seed will play at the No. 2 seed, and so on.
Among those northwest Ohio schools that would earn first-round home games would be Whitmer (5-1) and Findlay (3-3) in Division I. The Panthers are the No. 6 rated team and fellow Three Rivers Athletic Conference member Findlay is No. 7.
If the postseason started this week, No. 10 rated Perrysburg (4-2) would play at Findlay in the opening round. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Trojans 28-14 in Week 2. No. 16 rated Start (1-5) also would be in the D-I playoffs.
In Division II, Fremont Ross (5-1) would be the only local team to host a first-round game. No. 9 rated Central Catholic (4-2) would open on the road along with No. 12 St. John's Jesuit (2-3), No. 13 St. Francis de Sales (3-3), and No. 14 Anthony Wayne (4-2).
Southview (2-4) would not be in the D-III playoffs as the Cougars, who lost 42-7 to Perrysburg last Friday, are currently rated at No. 17. Southview had moved into the No. 15 spot last week.
In Division IV, No. 4 Port Clinton (5-1) would host No. 13 Wauseon (4-2) in the opening round. Scott (5-1), which defeated Bowsher 32-16 last Thursday, would also host a home playoff game. No. 14 Rossford (3-3) and Bryan (3-3) would open on the road.
In Division V, No. 7 Liberty-Benton (4-1) would host No. 10 Lakota (4-2).
Undefeated Otsego (6-0) remains the No. 1 team in Region 18 of D-V. The Knights would host Brooklyn (3-3) in the first round.
Fellow Northern Buckeye Conference members No. 3 Eastwood (6-0) and No. 8 Elmwood (4-1) also would host opening-round playoff games. Genoa (3-3) and Oak Harbor (4-2) would be in but would start on the road.
In Region 22 of Division VI, No. 1 Archbold would host Fairview (2-4) in the first round. Also earning home games in the opening round would be No. 6 Gibsonburg (5-1) and No. 8 Liberty Center (4-2). No. 10 Cardinal Stritch (3-1), No. 12 Delta (3-3), No. 14 Ottawa Hills (4-2), and No. 15 Van Buren (2-3) also would earn playoff berths.
In Division VII, No. 1 rated Edon (5-1) would entertain No. 16 Spencerville (2-4) in the first round of the Region 26 playoffs. No. 5 McComb (5-1) and No. 6 Patrick Henry (5-1) also would open the postseason at home.
In April, the OHSAA voted to increase the number of playoff qualifiers to 16 schools per region. A total of 448 schools will officially qualify for the playoffs.
