OHSAA football state final replay: Hoban vs. Toledo Central Catholic

CANTON — The Hoban football team's quest for another OHSAA state championship ended in disappointment Thursday night in the Division II state final. The Knights, seeking their sixth state title in the last eight years, were beaten 28-21 by Toledo Central Catholic at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The game kicked off a weekend of seven state finals in three days at Hall of Fame Stadium.

The Knights began this title-run stretch by beating Toledo Central Catholic in 2015, when both were in Division III. The Irish had their own title run, winning three from 2005-14, beating Joe Burrow and Athens in the 2014 Division III final. Now, the Irish have their fourth title under head coach Greg Dempsey.

Here's how the game unfolded through our updates on the game:

Toledo Central Catholic times four

The Fighting Irish won their fourth state title in a 28-21 win over Archbishop Hoban.

Winston Delp clinched it with an interception on their own 44-yard line.

It's the second runner-up finish for the Knights.

Central Catholic previously won in 2005, 2012 and 2014.

Last life for Hoban?

Hoban has the ball down 28-21.

The Knights start with the ball on its own 17.

There are 15 ticks left.

After review, he's just short

On fourth-and-3 from the Hoban, the referees went an official review on a 2-yard gain by Lamar Sperling. The call stood and Central Catholic took the ball over with 2:24 left and the Knights trailing 28-21.

And here we go....

Hoban still has life.

With 4:55 left and down 28-21, Archbishop Hoban has the ball on its own 25.

That hurts; For how long?

Down 28-21 with 7:06, Toledo Central Catholic faced fourth-and-2 on its own 33, but a penalty for an illegal substitution gave the Fighting Irish a first down.

TCC now has the ball on the Hoban 44 with 5:54 left.

On the record, Lamar Sperling is awesome

Lamar Sperling's 1-yard touchdown run with 38 left in the third quarter made it 28-21 Toledo Central Catholic.

It also broke the state record as the Buffalo commit scored his 58th touchdown of the season.

His 324 yards rushing in the final are two back of second for must yards in a state final and 69 yards away from the all-time record (Tony Franklin, Chanel vs. Marion Pleasant, 2001).

Big "Mo" paying a visit to Archbishop Hoban?

The Knights made their second straight stop of the half and have the ball halfway through the second quarter.

It's 28-14, but the Knights have already picked up a first down after the punt.

After a first down run by Lamar Sperling and a personal foul on Toledo Central Catholic, Hoban has the ball on its own 38 with 5:01 left in the third.

There goes that man and he's got a record.

Lamar Sperling made good on a third-and-17 with a 49-yard run for a touchdown. It brought the deficit to 28-14 with 7:50 left and added to an already absurd stat line.

In his final high school game, the 2022 Mr. Football recipient has 254 yards and two touchdowns.

He also tied Canal Winchester Harvest Prep's Daniel Bangura the state record for most touchdowns in a season (57 in 2016).

Flagged again

A false start stalled Hoban's opening drive of the second half and forced the Knights' fourth three-and-out.

The Knights have been flagged nine times for 66 yards. There's 9:36 left in the third quarter.

Tale of the tape at halftime

It's an odd box score here.

Hoban has 8 more yards total offense than Central Catholic (190-182). That said, the Knights have no passing yards and have turned the ball over twice when they went back to pass.

Both those turnovers turned into touchdowns and the Knights compounded that with eight penalties for 161 yards.

Lamar Sperling has rushed for 197 yards and a score on 18 carries for the Knights.

TyWaun Clark (36 passing yards, TD, 73 rushing yards, 2 TDs) has been the difference for the Fighting Irish.

Chris Edmonds also has 73 yards rushing for TCC.

Right corner, wrong side for Hoban

Central Catholic answered right back with an 11-play, 72-yard drive to push the Fighting Irish's lead back out to three touchdowns.

TyWaun Clark added to his impressive first half with a 15-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone to Durye'a Hall.

It's 28-7 TCC at the break.

Lamar Sperling is sterling

Everyone knows Lamar Sperling is going to get the ball. Few know how to stop him.

The Buffalo commit put Hoban right back into things with an 8-yard touchdown to make it 21-7 with 6:37 left in the second quarter.

He's rushed 19 times for 191 yards already and is 11.9 yards per carry.

Holy Toledo

The Fighting Irish's defense came through again.

This time with Hoban in the red zone. JacQai Long's pass to Jay'vian Crable tipped off the Knights' wide receivers arms into the arms of Central Catholic's Braden Awls.

Awls collected it on the 8-yard line a returned it 92 yards to the house.

It's 21-0 with 9:22 left and Hoban NEEDS a good drive to avoid a potential 30-point running clock at the break.

One way traffic after one quarter.

As you might expect from a 14-0 Toledo Central Catholic lead, it was a lopsided first quarter as Central Catholic outgained the Knights 151-53.

Chris Edmonds (7 carries, 69 yards) and TyWaun Clark (6, 40, 2 TDs) led the Fighting Irish.

Lamar Sperling rushed for 58 yards on eight carries for Hoban.

It's a yellow flag, but it might as well be red

Archbishop Hoban has started all three of its drives with a penalty right off the jump.

On two of those three, it squandered some solid plays.

For the second time, Hoban is inside its own 10.

One of the drives gave Toledo Central Catholic the ball inside the 50. The other two resulted in punts.

Fighting Irish go up two scores quick

After giving up two big runs to Lamar Sperling, Toledo Central Catholic's defense showed its teeth when Deandre Ellis sacked JacQai Long and forced a fumble that Tyler Jackson recovered on the Hoban 31 with 5:06 left in the first quarter.

Central Catholic wasted no time with a 24-yard touchdown run from TyWaun Clark, his second, to put the Fighting Irish up 14-0 with 4:16 left in the first quarter.

He's a good back, too

With all due respect to Mr. Football Lamar Sperling for Archbishop Hoban, Toledo Central Catholic has a good back, too.

That played out when 2021 honorable mention running back Chris Edmonds rushed for 59 yards of a seven-play, 91-yard drive that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run from TyWaun Clark to put Toledo Central Cathlic up 7-0 with 6:56 left in the first quarter.

Good first impression, times two

The Knights opened with a solid defensive stop, forcing Toledo Central Catholic to a three-and-out.

Chris Edmonds rushed for 4 yards on the first play and TyWaun Clark rushed for 5 yards to get it to third-and-1, but an incomplete pass and nice return by Parker Falkenstein gave the Knights the ball on their own 40.

That field position was wasted with the Fighting Irish holding Hoban to three-play drive to get the ball back on their own 8.
