OHSAA releases second-round pairings

Oct. 31—COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the football regional quarterfinal playoff pairings Sunday afternoon. Unless otherwise noted, all second-round games will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4.

The regional playoffs follow bracket format. The OHSAA will begin using neutral sites beginning with the regional semifinals November 11-12, when Divisions I, II, III and V will play on Nov. 11 and Divisions IV, VI and VII will play on Nov. 12.

Tickets for all games must be purchased in advance at ohsaa.org/tickets.

One area team is left in the playoff field, as St. Paul (8-3) will make a lengthy road trip in Div. VII Region 25 action.

The No. 5-seeded Flyers will make the 125-mile trip (2 hours, 30 minutes) to take on No. 4 Southern (10-1) in Salineville — about 28 miles north of Steubenville, and 15 miles away from the Pennsylvania border.

St. Paul advanced with a 64-20 win over No. 12 Lisbon David Anderson on Oct. 28, while the Indians hosted and beat another area team, South Central, by a 65-21 score.

Friday's game will be a third straight meeting between the Flyers and Indians. St. Paul won 48-14 in the first round in 2020, then outlasted the Indians in double-overtime, 21-14, in the second round last season.

Both those games were at Contractors Stadium in Norwalk.

Of note, two area graduates have coached their respective team into the second round.

In Div. II Region 6, No. 5 Olmsted Falls (9-2) will visit No. 4 Anthony Wayne (10-1). The Bulldogs are coached by Tom DeLuca, a 1999 Norwalk graduate.

In Div. VII Region 26, No. 2 Antwerp (11-0) will host No. 10 Delphos Jefferson (7-4). The Archers are coached by Jason Hale, a 2006 South Central grad.

How the seeds fared

Of note, the No. 9 and No. 10 seeds went a combined 31-25 playing on the road Friday in the first round of the playoffs. Overall, the home teams (top 8 seeds) went 178-46 in the first round.
