Epic wins by Lane McKenzie, Tyler Shellenbarger highlight OHSAA first round

Eleven Portage County boys wrestlers kicked off their state journeys in Division III Friday afternoon, going 5-6.

Chalk held, with every one and two seed moving on and every three and four seed falling to the consolation bracket.

Not that the favorites didn't face heavy challenges.

Mogadore senior Tyler Shellenbarger (215) prevailed in extra time, rolling over Mechanicsburg senior Zane Hitchcock in the final seconds of the second overtime to take control for a 4-3 win.

Rootstown senior Lane McKenzie (190) staged a big comeback from 3-0 and 4-2 deficits with a tying takedown in the last 10 seconds of the third and a win by pin in overtime.

Garfield's dynamic duo of Hunter Andel (165) and Keegan Sell (190) were both dominant in their first-round wins, as was Rootstown senior Cody Coontz (165), who pinned in 1:06.

It was a strong finish after a tough start for the locals.

Rootstown junior Will McEwuen (113), making his state debut, fell behind early against Edison sophomore Abe Hermes, who was fourth in the state last year, with Hermes winning 14-1.

Crestwood junior JP Wrobel (126) waged a spirited back-and-forth battle with Seneca East's Nathan Parks. Trailing 4-2 after two, Wrobel got on top of Parks for a four-point swing to take a 6-4 lead, but Parks got a reversal at the end of the third, then pinned Wrobel early in overtime.

Rootstown sophomore Tristen McKibben (157) trailed Shawnee's Brayden Doran just 4-3 midway through the third, but as he attempted the equalizing escape, McKibben was cradled for two en route to a 6-3 loss.

Waterloo's Justin Fox (157) similarly gave a leading state contender, Legacy Christian's Ethan Cooper, a feverish battle before falling 16-7.

Moving outside of Portage County, Manchester sophomore Evan Kusmits (126) impressed against last year's state champion at 106, St. Paul's Casper Caizzo, with Caizzo ultimately triumphing 2-1.
