Oil drops even as OPEC curbs output

It is supposed to give oil a boost.

OPEC ministers gathered in the Austrian capital have agreed curbs on supply in a bid to prop up prices.

They want to prevent a glut of crude as flagging economic growth saps demand.

The accord, which includes non-members like Russia, will see production fall by half a million barrels per day.

That's on top of existing restrictions.

And it seems agreement was hard to reach.

Thursday talks dragged on so long OPEC had to cancel a press conference, and the gala dinner for delegates.

On Friday there was little sign of a big surge in prices.

International benchmark Brent crude was down half a percent by early afternoon.

Traders may be focused on the deal's short duration.

The output cuts only apply until March.

Some OPEC members had wanted them to last until June or later.
