When is it OK to decline to tip? We're asking for a friend.

Coloradoan Conversations is the Coloradoan's opinion forum. Each Friday we'll pose conversation-starting questions online at Coloradoan.com/opinion and moderate online discussion through the following Wednesday, recapping the best discussion points online the following Friday and in Sunday's printed edition.

This week's Coloradoan Conversation Starter:

Coloradoan Conversations commenter Harry S. wants to talk tipping, so let's oblige him. Specifically, Harry, who says he's "never been a fan (of tipping) and wish the restaurants would pay a regular wage to employees and charge accordingly for the food," wants to know when it's proper to tip and when it's OK not to.

Should you tip for a $5 bottle of water at a Colorado Rockies game? How about when ordering takeout from a sit-down restaurant, or for online orders? Harry asks: "I get that much of the takeout tipping started during COVID, and I was much more amenable to it then, but what is the proper thing to do now?"

As Harry points out, consumers are being asked to tip in places where they haven't been in the past. Are there places where you've politely drawn the line, or where you've felt pressure to tip more than you're comfortable? How have you handled those situations?
