SHALIMAR — Okaloosa County Commissioner and Vice Chairman Paul Mixon has been appointed to the Florida Association of Counties Health, Safety and Justice Policy Committee by the association president and Charlotte County Commissioner Bill Truex.

“I’m honored to be chosen to work on this committee,” Mixon said in a statement. “Healthcare, public safety, and substance abuse treatment are all topics that I am passionate about. I think that this committee has a real opportunity to craft policy that will make a difference in the lives of Florida citizens.”

What is the Healthy, Safety and Justice Committee?

As one of the many FAC committees, the HSJ develops and recommends an annual statewide legislative platform that deals with:

  • Behavioral and mental health.

  • Health care and human services funding.

  • Healthcare and human services policy.

  • Emergency medical services.

  • Law enforcement, juvenile justice and corrections.

  • Substance use disorder prevention and treatment.

  • Emergency management.

  • Emergency communication.

  • Judiciary – Article V.

Mixon joins Commissioners Sam Parker from Santa Rosa County and Danny Glidewell from Walton County as the only members representing Northwest Florida.

As a policy leader, Mixon will hold the position for one year. He will work closely with other members to develop legislation on issues affecting the upcoming 2024 legislative session.

“The success of the association, and by extension Florida counties, relies heavily on the role played by our policy committees,” Truex said in a statement. “I took careful time and consideration when choosing this year’s appointments and I am confident that each leader’s invaluable expertise will be an asset to accurately represent the diverse needs of our state.”
