Canadian Valley tech students earn medals

Several Canadian Valley Technology Center students recently returned home from national contests toting awards.

Seven students won national championships in their respective student organization contests. Two students captured silver medals, and a team of seven students brought home a bronze.

Kaitlin Perkins, 20, of Minco, won both national gold and silver medals at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America contest in San Diego. She is an adult student in the school's early care and education program.

Among Canadian Valley Technology Center’s other national gold medal winners is Perkins’ classmate, Maudi Carter, of Yukon, who won the Early Childhood Presentation category for high school students. At SkillsUSA Nationals in Atlanta, the school’s five-member post-secondary Chapter Business Procedures team captured gold. Team members are Raegan Manning, of El Reno; Alec Samples, of El Reno; Alex Shepherd, of Hinton; Kyle Levesque, of Yukon; and Clayton Nelson, of Yukon. Canadian Valley Technology Center’s Chickasha Campus was well represented also with a runner-up finish in the National CNC Technician contest by James Mayhugh, of Cement. Additionally, their seven-member quiz bowl team won the bronze medal. Team members included Cash Muncrief, Zayne Jimenez, Alysa Hughen-Green, Brock Voyles, Kyle Perry, Omar Arredondo and Jarrett Linden.

Additionally, SkillsUSA Chickasha Campus' Andrew Martinez, placed seventh in the CNC Technician contest; Trenton Rippy placed ninth in Prepared Speech; and Josh Morris placed ninth in Mobile Robotics.

Also, from the El Reno Campus, Dane Stowe placed 10th in the Electrical Construction Wiring, Post-Secondary contest; and Jordan Macklin placed 12th in the Automotive Service Technology, Post-Secondary contest.

UCO professor gets grant for behavioral program

Scott Singleton, a professor in the University of Central Oklahoma Department of Psychology, has been awarded a $130,000 grant from the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Special Education Services.

The grant will be used to provide behavioral consultation to Oklahoma public schools at no cost through a program called Behavior Central, set to launch Sept. 19. UCO graduate students in the board-certified behavior analyst program will provide coaching and training for special education teachers working with students who have significant behavioral challenges.

“Graduate students will work with K-12 special education teachers and students by conducting assessments, designing treatment plans, providing staff training and ongoing coaching support,” Singleton said.

UCO design student wins ad award

Claire Mantle, a recent graduate from the University of Central Oklahoma’s School of Design, has won an award at the national level of the 2022 American Advertising Awards (ADDYs).

Mantle, from Owasso, won a silver award for her illustration campaign titled “If I Could Speak.” She graduated from UCO in spring 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design.

At the Oklahoma City ADDYs, UCO’s School of Design earned 39 gold, 22 silver and 31 bronze awards, including four professional awards. Gold and silver winners moved forward to compete at the district level, where UCO design students won four gold, eight silver and 16 bronze awards, including one professional award.
