Artists wanted for Fresh Paint New Year’s Eve mural competition

Arts Council Oklahoma City is searching for artists from the black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) community to participate in the Fresh Paint: OKC NYE Mural Project.

Artists between the ages of 18-25 will collaborate with mentors to create an 8’ x 8’ mural at the OKC Farmers Public Market during October and November. The muralist with the most public votes will receive a prize.

Angela Cozby, Arts Council Oklahoma City executive director, said "We are excited to partner with the OKC Thunder to showcase the incredible work of local BIPOC artists whose artistic endeavors don’t represent a singular voice, but rather the beauty found in the diversity of our community.”

Online tool to report flood damage available in Norman

NORMAN — The Stormwater Division of the city of Norman has created a more efficient way to report flood damage.

Residents can now upload information, as well as photos of damage, at any time through the new online portal instead of waiting in a queue during traditional business hours to report flood damage by phone.

“We appreciate the collaborative effort of the community as we continue pursuing projects and opportunities that can improve the quality of our stormwater,” said Jason Murphy, Stormwater Program manager.

Art in Schools Program celebrates 20 years

EDMOND — In 2002, a collaboration called the "Art in Schools Program" (AIS) was developed between the Edmond Fine Arts Institute and Edmond Public Schools to meet the need for art education due to a lack of funding for the arts.

The program provides all third- and fourth-grade students in Edmond with a 45-minute art classes each week taught by professional art education instructors. Classes begin in September 2022 and run through May 2023. Students will get to participate in hands-on activities using a wide variety of mediums like painting, drawing, mixed media and clay.

Shannon Price, executive director and former instructor at the Edmond Fine Arts Institute said "It is exciting to see our goal of providing art at every elementary school grow."

Arcadia Farmers Market moves indoors

ARCADIA — The Arcadia Farmers Market has ended this year’s outdoor market season early, as growers struggle to provide fresh fruits and vegetables during an unusually hot summer.

Vendors will continue to bring just-picked produce to the indoor market at 210 N Odor St. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Locally grown and produced food available at the store includes micro-greens, squash, peppers, farm-raised beef, fresh eggs and milk. Other vendors provide homemade baked goods, gourmet coffee and tea, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, home-canned jelly, pickles and handcrafted lotions, soaps and candles.

American Farmers and Ranchers Youth Advisory Council has been announced

American Farmers and Ranchers (AFR) Cooperative announced its 2022-2023 AFR Youth Advisory Council.

This year's council members are Kolton Hunt, of Wellston; Callen Cox, of Crescent; Kelby Ott, of Lomega; Morley Griffith, of Dale; and Halee Pullen, of Stratford.

The AFR Youth Advisory Council is an opportunity for high school seniors who are active in the AFR Youth Program to further their leadership and program management skills.

American Farmers and Ranchers Youth Program also hosts a youth leadership summit, statewide scholarships, speech contests, livestock judging and grading competitions, and many other development opportunities.

Route 66 author to sign books at Arcadia Round Barn

ARCADIA — David Wickline, the author of several books about traveling along Route 66, will sign copies of his latest guide, the “Route 66 Handbook,” from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 21, at the Arcadia Round Barn, located six miles east of Interstate 35 on Historic Route 66.

"The handbook is a planning tool for Route 66 trips ,as well as a daily guide along the 2,450-mile trail from Chicago to Santa Monica," Wickline said.

The book features information about more than 2,000 attractions, eateries, museums, motels, hotels and recreational vehicle parks, with GPS coordinates. Copies of the handbook will be available during the book signing for $20.
