Vintage Market Days comes to Norman

NORMAN — Vintage Market Days, an upscale, vintage-inspired, indoor/outdoor market, celebrates 10 years of success 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 28-29 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, 615 E Robinson St. “Let’s Go Girls” is the theme for this event.

Vendors will sell a wide variety of goods, including vintage home decor and furniture, art, repurposed goods, boutique clothing, handmade goods, jewelry, children and baby goods, yummy food, goods for men, fun activities for children, a costume contest, food trucks, live music and trick-or-treating on Sunday.

Tickets are $11 online or $12 at the gate on Oct. 28-29 and $6 online or $8 at the gate Oct. 30. Children 12 and under are free.

UCO receives a $1 million grant

University of Central Oklahoma College of Mathematics and Science faculty members were recently awarded a six-year grant totaling $1,187,961 from the National Science Foundation, Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program.

The program provides funding to higher education institutions to offer scholarships and support that will recruit and prepare science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students to become K-12 teachers allowing them to collaborate with Oklahoma City Public Schools to enhance STEM education in schools that need it the most.

The program will launch with 14 Oklahoma high school biology and math teachers who will become Master Teaching Fellows. They will conduct STEM and educational action research, participate in leadership training and continue professional development and community building while teaching in high-need schools.

Oklahomans serve aboard USS Ronald Reagan

Oklahoma U.S. Navy sailors serve and protect from around the globe aboard the USS Ronald Reagan. The flagship of Carrier Strike Group 5 provides a combat-ready force that protects and defends the United States, and supports alliances, partnerships and collective maritime interests in the Indo-Pacific region.

Norman plans first International Festival

NORMAN — Norman's first International Festival — a family-friendly event that will intentionally create spaces to learn about various cultures and customs that comprise the tapestry of Norman — will take place from 2-6 p.m. Oct. 23 at Reaves Park, 2501 Jenkins Ave.

Entertainment is set to include Asian Lion Dancers, Mariachi Band, Native American Dancers, Guatemalan Dance, Indian Classical Dance and more. There will be food trucks, vendors and children’s activities.

“We have a rich community that values building strong ties and relationships, and we are incredibly excited to offer another opportunity to expand upon that,” said Cinthya Allen, chief diversity & equity officer and event organizer.

OCCC awarded grant

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded Oklahoma City Community College a five-year, $1.16 million federal TRIO Program Educational Opportunity Centers grant that will help promote college readiness and accessibility to adults pursuing post-secondary education.

The grant will fund the Guidance for Realizing Individual Transformation (GRIT) program, which will serve first-generation and low-income adult learners in the Oklahoma City metro area.

The GRIT program also will focus on students who have English as a second language and military families and veterans, as well as other marginalized and underrepresented populations in higher education.

Autism Speaks invites OKC to walk

EDMOND — The Oklahoma City Autism Speaks Walk to promote acceptance and raise vital funds for people with autism will be on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the University of Central Oklahoma, 100 N University Drive, Edmond.

In the U.S., autism affects 1 in 44 children and 1 in 45 adults. Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for people with autism and their families.

Autism Speaks Walk events are tailored to fit local needs in each community, with the shared goal of providing a network of friendship and support and raising funds to create a better future for people with autism and their families.
