OKC, Midwest City, Edmond, Norman and Yukon churches hosting back-to-school activities

It's that time of year when local houses of worship assist students and their families with back-to-school needs.

Here is a list of some of the faith-based school-related give-away events and other activities planned in the next few weeks. Activities are free unless otherwise noted.

  • Remnant Church/Remnant Church Community Development Corp., Midwest City, "Back-to-School Community Outreach," 10 a.m. July 29, Kiwanis Park south pavilion, 1101 S Midwest Blvd., Midwest City; backpacks with school supplies will be distributed, while supplies last.   • First Christian Church of Edmond, 201 E 2, Edmond; "Back-to-School Bash," 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 5, students in need may receive free school supplies, haircuts and resources from community organizations, backpacks available for the first 1,000 students, while supplies last, Potential donors and sponsors, may email execdirector@project66.org to help.   • Alameda Church of Christ, 801 E Alameda, Norman; "Back-to-School Roundup," noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 5, event will be set up as a curbside pickup, registration begins at noon, free lunch lunches will be provided, first 525 students will be given a backpack with schools supplies, students must be present or proof (birth certificate) must be shown, families must live in Cleveland or McClain counties, organized by church's Streams of Water Ministry.   • Victory Family Church, 4343 N Flood, Norman; "Back-to-School Outreach," 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 5, free backpacks, school supplies, haircuts and sports physicals while supplies last, check website for times and dates of outreach events at Victory satellites in Newcastle, Shawnee and Chickasha.   • The Good Fight Church, "Yukon School Supply Drive," 9 to 1 p.m. Aug. 6, Yukon High School, 1777 S Yukon Parkway, free school supplies, activities, music, free haircuts, games, inflatables, food trucks, petting zoo and a brief message from church pastor, for youths in kindergarten through 12th grade, hosted by 20 churches and local nonprofits and businesses.   • OKC Faith Church, 800 S Portland, "Hope in the City 2023," 8 to 11 a.m. Aug. 12, back-to-school outreach, free backpacks and school supplies, while supplies last. Information: 405-948-7100.

  • Family of Faith Church, 13500 SE 15, Choctaw, "Back-to-School Slip-N-Slide Family Celebration," 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 13, free food and a giant slip n' slide water attraction will be featured, along with free school supplies and backpacks while supplies last, for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, child must be present to pick up backpacks/school supplies, nearly new clothing will be available.   • First United Methodist Church of Oklahoma City, 131 NW 4, "Back to School Celebration," 11 a.m. worship, cookout, face painting and games at 12:30 p.m., free school supplies while supplies last. Information: https://www.facebook.com/FirstChurchOkc.

  • Christ Church of Yukon, 620 W Vandament Ave., Yukon; "Back-to-School Bash," 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 13, outdoor worship service will begin at 9 a.m., back-to-school event will be at 10 a.m., free backpacks, school supplies, lunch, children's craft area, haircuts, clothing closet, while supplies last.
