Oklahoma City kept its spot as America's 20th largest city for another year and continues to grow, according to 2022 US Census Bureau population estimates.

Oklahoma's capital city joined the top 20 largest American cities after 2021 population estimates were released a year ago. Now, it remains there and is also the 6th-fastest-growing top 20 city from 2020 to 2022.

Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt took to Twitter to celebrate that OKC's top 20 placement was "no fluke!"

"Just think - One out of every 50 OKC residents did not even live here when the pandemic started," Holt said on Twitter. "Population growth is the ultimate validation and our growth is strong."

How fast is Oklahoma City growing?

Oklahoma City grew by nearly 2% between 2020 and 2022, adding 13,716 people. And between the 2010 and 2020 Censuses, Oklahoma City was one of 14 American cities that added more than 100,000 people.

The top 20 cities that grew the fastest between April 2020 and July 2022 are:

  • Fort Worth, which grew by 3.95%

  • San Antonio, which grew by 2.62%

  • Charlotte, which grew by 2.57%

  • Jacksonville, which grew by 2.23%

  • Phoenix, which grew by 2.20%

  • Oklahoma City, which grew by 1.97%

  • Seattle, which grew by 1.63%

  • Austin, which grew by 1.29%

  • Columbus, which grew by 0.23%

  • Houston, which grew by 0.06%

The other half of the top 20 cities — New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Diego, Dallas, San Jose, Indianapolis, San Francisco and Denver — actually declined in population between 2020 and 2022.

Holt said in 2022 he believed people are moving to Oklahoma City due to quality-of-life improvements, largely through the Metropolitan Area Projects program that started in 1993 and is on its fourth iteration. Residents and visitors will enjoy a new fairgrounds coliseum, multipurpose stadium, affordable housing, a new civil rights center, diversion programs and youth center through the one-cent MAPS 4 sales tax.

"It's a validation of everything we've done," Holt told The Oklahoman in 2022. "Infinite choices that we have made as a community basically boil down to, 'Do you want to live here or not?' … And the answer is clearly that people want to live here."
