Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault and guard Ty Jerome spoke with the media following practice on Thursday. The Thunder are currently enjoying a three-day break after playing a grueling 11 games in 20 days stretch. The Thunder’s next game is at home against the Indiana Pacers on Friday, Jan. 28. The Thunder last played on Monday in a one-point loss to the Chicago Bulls.

Let’s recap what the most notable quotes and paraphrases were from this post-practice media session as the team tries to snap a six-game losing streak and get out of its current funk of losing 13 of its last 15 games.

Enjoying the three-day break

Jerome said that the team has enjoyed the three-day break as a chance to energize themselves again after playing a grueling 11 games in 20 days stretch that included seven of those games being on the road.

Jerome noted that it gives guys a chance to be in the gym in a relaxed environment where they can talk a little bit of trash with each other.

Derrick Favors update

Daigneault mentioned that Derrick Favors did not practice on Thursday. Favors has not played since Jan. 15 as he has been dealing with lower back soreness.

Considering where the Thunder are at and Favors being 30 years old, I expect the team to take a cautionary approach with Favors’ back troubles.

Theo Maledon praise

Daigneault praised Theo Maledon as he was recalled from the Oklahoma City Blue on Thursday. Maledon has been great with the Blue this season as he has averaged 17.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 14 games with them.

“Happy for him. Impressed. Think it’s a testament to his consistency with his approach,” said Daigneault. “It’s given him a second wind here. He’s played with a lot of confidence with the Blue.”

It will be interesting to see how Daigneault plans to give Maledon minutes as last season’s total minutes leader is in a logjam with other young guards on the roster.

“When he comes back here, I want to reward him with opportunity, said Daigneault. “I don’t know when that’ll be.”
