Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren will have a planned follow-up procedure in the coming weeks to remove the hardware in his right foot, a Thunder spokesperson told The Oklahoman on Wednesday.

The procedure will be a benchmark in Holmgren’s recovery process from a Lisfranc injury that required surgery exactly three months ago. The surgery was performed by Dr. David Porter of Forte Sports Medicine and Orthopedics in Carmel, Indiana.

Holmgren suffered the foot injury at a Summer pro-am event in Seattle. Lisfranc injuries are rare among basketball players. The Lisfranc ligament, named after a French surgeon, connects the bones in the midfoot.

While Holmgren is progressing, his status for this season is unchanged. The 20-year-old center has already been ruled out for the entire 2022-23 campaign. It’s expected that he’ll be healthy by the start of next season.

Holmgren, the Thunder’s No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, no longer has to use a scooter to get around and he’s recently been shooting low-stress jumpshots without wearing a protective boot.

It’s likely that Holmgren will have to go back to wearing a boot after the follow-up procedure before he’s able to return to basketball activities.
