"The chief business of the American people is business," President Calvin Coolidge said back in the day, nearly a century ago, in fact.

There's a lot of America out there, too much for some business people in Oklahoma City to resist.

Here are a few OKC-area companies that are also doing business elsewhere.

JAH Realty LP in Oklahoma City develops shopping centers in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex

JAH Realty LP, with headquarters at 1008 E Hefner Road, has been building and operating retail property for 50 years, some 2.6 million square feet of it.

Until not that long ago, about half was in the OKC area, and about half in Texas.

"Our DFW portfolio comprises 1.6 million square feet, so we now own more real estate in the DFW area than we do in OKC. That has only recently been the case," said Jeff Norman, president. "Until about four years ago it was about 50% between OKC and DFW."

Booming Frisco, 30 miles north of Dallas, in particular, is "one of the hottest markets in the United States," he said.

Authentic Custom Homes, 2422 NW 178, has another office: 10000 Marshal Drive, #L19, Lenexa, Kansas.

The husband-wife team of Kenyon and Brandi Woods, in business for 17 years — married for 25 this September — expanded their homebuilding business north a few years ago. They build in DeSoto, Spring Hill, Basehor and other suburbs of Kansas City, Kansas, and in Ramore, Blue Springs and other suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri.

Authentic Custom Homes has built about 1,000 homes in Oklahoma, and is just getting started up north, Brandi Woods said.

"We opened Authentic Homes KC LLC in April of 2019. We are celebrating four years this month. In that timeframe, we have built approximately 70 homes in Kansas and Missouri," she said, noting that it started at a meeting of the National Association of Home Builders in 2018.

"Shortly after that meeting, one of the KC members of Kenyon’s builders group presented us the opportunity to expand into the KC market. Through that connection we were introduced to bankers and developers in the area and doors began to open quickly," she said. "We have a great team of people in OKC and KC that make it all possible."

Robinson Park, based in Leadership Square, 211 N Robinson Ave., downtown, is the property management arm of Newmark Robinson Park, a commercial real estate brokerage across the street at City Place, 204 N Robinson, about 30 feet away.

It's property footprint extends 740 miles to the northeast, to Indianapolis, Indiana — and to Kansas City, Missouri, Columbus, Ohio, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as well as Tulsa and Bentonville, Arkansas.

In Indianapolis, it's 48-story, 957,667-square-foot Salesforce Tower and its Circle Building, at 111 Monument Circle. The owner is Square Deal Investments, a firm associated with Robinson Park.

"An icon, rising at 48 stories, Salesforce Tower and the Circle Building offer unmatched views of the city while being positioned on the historic Monument Circle," Robinson Park says on a building flyer. "In addition to being in the center of an energetic downtown district, these iconic Class A buildings offer striking lobby entrances clad in marble, efficient floorplates, an abundance of on-site and nearby amenities, and easily accessible to Interstates 65 and 70 and the airport."

OKC's FSB Architects + Engineers has projects across the United States

FSB Architects + Engineers, 5801 Broadway Extension, Suite 500, started in 1945 as Coston-Frankfurt-Short, and later was called Frankfurt-Short-Bruza for years until settling on FSB. The firm also has offices in Tulsa, Los Angeles, and Mobile, Alabama.

FSB has left its mark all over the country, but its greatest legacy to its hometown is its hand in the Metropolitan Area Projects, started in 1993 with a city vote to spend $350 million on a new downtown library, Bricktown canal and ballpark, low-water dams on the Oklahoma River, and an NBA arena downtown. MAPS continues.

"None of those achievements would have succeeded without MAPS, and without the efforts of one architectural and engineering firm, MAPS would not have succeeded. That firm is FSB," former OKC Mayor Ron Norick has said. "Let me repeat that for emphasis. Without the creative talents of the people at FSB, there would be no MAPS" to revive downtown and grow the city out of the 1980s oil bust and real estate crash.

Federal and military work — including two ICBM missile silos at Clinton-Sherman Air Force Base, in operation from 1954 to 1969 near Burns Flat — early on became an FSB mainstay. Some of the latest work is nearing completion: a new hangar for Air Force One and other aircraft at Joint-Base Andrews, the home base in Maryland for aircraft used by the president.

FSB's work for Bethlehem Steel once required an office in Pennsylvania, and decades of work for American Airlines from coast to coast, at one time required an office in New York with a workforce of 150. Other highlights include work for Federal Express at its Memphis, Tennessee, headquarters and elsewhere.
