OkCupid Is Browser-Blocking Firefox to Support Gay Rights

OkCupid, the dating site that feels less dirty than Tinder, is taking a stand against Mozilla Firefox's new CEO Brendan Eich by urging members to stop using its browser to access its site.

If you use Firefox to check your quiver matches, this is what will happen:

If you click on the "Continue to OkCupid" at the bottom of the page, you will be able to use Firefox to view the site, but you'll feel bad about it the entire time.

Eich became Mozilla's CEO on March 24. As OkCupid's post says, six years ago he donated $1,000 to Proposition 8, which made same-sex marriage illegal under California's constitution. As Eich's own employees began speaking out against him and asking him to step down, Mozilla stated that it supports LGBT equality. Eich said on his blog that he supported equality for everyone in the workplace. In the past, Eich has said that "the donation does not in itself constitute evidence of animosity," but hasn't provided the context for his donation nor apologized for it. Neither of those posts allowed comments.

OkCupid isn't the only company boycotting (or urging a boycott of) Mozilla for Eich's appointment. Rarebit also pulled its apps from the Firefox Marketplace, saying in an open letter:

By the very bones in our body, we cannot dare use our creativity, experience, knowledge, and passion to further the career of a man who has to this day not apologized for his support. I can’t spend hours and days and years polishing, building, and upgrading applications that make him richer than he is.

Actions have consequences.

Update, 10:20 p.m.: A Mozilla spokesperson tells The Wire:

Mozilla supports equality for all, including marriage equality for LGBT couples. No matter who you are or who you love, everyone deserves the same rights and to be treated equally. OkCupid never reached out to us to let us know of their intentions, nor to confirm facts.
