OkCupid introduces feature allowing users to label themselves 'pro-choice'

·1 min read

OkCupid has introduced a new "pro-choice" badge that can be displayed on users' dating profiles in order to make their beliefs more prominent.

The optional display icon comes in response to Texas's Senate Bill 8, which outlaws abortion after six weeks. The company announced that for every profile that uses the "pro-choice" badge, OkCupid will donate $1 to Planned Parenthood. OkCupid's parent company, Match Group, has its headquarters in Dallas.

It is not unusual for OkCupid to create political badges — there is already a badge for "Black Lives Matter," as well as icons disclosing whether users voted or have received vaccinations.

The badge was created in response to the increasing prominence of the issue on the dating service. After Texas passed its controversial restrictions on abortion, many users started adding statements to their bio. Between September 2020 and September 2021, the amount of users who displayed the word "pro-choice" in their bios rose by 18%, according to the New York Times.

Political preferences and personal beliefs have become common disclosures on dating services in recent years. Dating app Bumble allows users to describe themselves as liberal, conservative, or both, then allows users to filter matches based on their own preferences.

Both Bumble and Match Group have pledged financial support for abortion rights advocacy groups in Texas.

Bumble, which is based in Austin, Texas, announced the creation of a "relief fund supporting the reproductive rights of women and people across the gender spectrum who seek abortions in Texas.”
