Oklahoma achievers: OU Black Alumni Society scholarships; AT&T awards scholarships

OU Black Alumni Society awards scholarships

The OU Black Alumni Society Oklahoma City/Norman Chapter recently awarded scholarships to six students from the Oklahoma City metro area. Each scholarship is 50% cash and 50% tuition waivers from the OU Alumni Association and OU Diversity Enrichment Programs.

The OU Black Alumni Scholarship recipients are:

• Danielle Mosby, from Classen School of Advanced Studies at Northeast High School received the Dr. LaMona Evans Groce Undergraduate Endowed Scholarship and the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Scholarship.

• Precious Chukwuma, from Southmoore High School, received the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Scholarship.

• Ka’Tani Gouch, from Moore High School, received the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Scholarship.

• Lauren Roberts, from Classen School of Advanced Studies, received the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Scholarship.

• Joseph Onema, from Harding Preparatory High School, received the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Scholarship.

• Carter J. Parker, Classen School of Advanced Studies at Northeast, received the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Scholarship.

The Dr. LaMona Evans Groce undergraduate endowed scholarship was established by the chapter in 2010 at the University of Oklahoma Foundation, with a gift received from Lonnie Groce on behalf of his wife, who died March 29, 2010, and was a 1967 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School and 1987 graduate of OU with a Ph.D.

The Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Scholarship is named for the woman who in 1948 was the plaintiff in a precedent-setting U.S. Supreme Court case, Sipuel vs. Oklahoma, that provided for the admission of African American students to professional and graduate programs.

AT&T awards three OU sophomores scholarships

AT&T recently selected three sophomores from the University of Oklahoma for the Stephenson Scholars Program. The students will each receive a $45,000 scholarship, a paid summer internship with AT&T in Dallas, a full-time job offer upon graduation, as well as professional development and training.

The Stephenson Scholars Program honors the legacy of former AT&T chairman, CEO and OU alumnus Randall Stephenson, while also focusing on increasing representation in telecommunications and technology industries.

The three students chosen to receive the inaugural scholarship are:

Carolyn Berggren, of Edmond, is a biochemistry major in the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences. She is the chair of the Human Diversity Committee in the Undergraduate Student Congress, as well as a member of OU’s Women’s Health Advocacy, an organization dedicated to increasing awareness of women’s health issues.

Parker Fikes, of Carlinville, Illinois, is an industrial engineering major in the Gallogly College of Engineering. He is an active member of the Sports Data and Analytics Club and has worked as a research assistant for the Data Institute for Societal Challenges.

Manuvel Sibichan, of Edmond, is a finance and accounting major in the Price College of Business. He is a member of the President’s Leadership Class, co-chair of the Crimson Leadership Academy, and a member of the Beta Upsilon Chi Fraternity.

Georgia State University awards fellowship

Katrina Farris, of Choctaw, a Georgia State University doctoral student in psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, received a fellowship with the Brains & Behavior Fellows program.

The Neuroscience Institute at Georgia State runs the Brains and Behavior (B&B) Fellowship program for graduate students across many disciplines whose research contributes to the field of neuroscience. This program promotes collaboration between departments and supplements graduate-level education at the university.
