Oklahoma achievers: OU Health grant awarded; Hearing loss scholarships

OU Health researcher receives grant

Desiree Azizoddin, a researcher at the OU Health Promotion Research Center, was awarded a $1.1 million grant from the National Cancer Institute that will support her career development and research focused on the development of scalable behavioral interventions to improve cancer pain.

The primary goal of the grant is to develop a smartphone app-based application that provides opioid management support for patients with chronic pain from advanced incurable cancers.

Hearing loss association awards scholarships

Hearing Loss Association of America Central Oklahoma Chapter (HLAA COC) has awarded three scholarships of $1,500 each to students with hearing loss who will be attending higher education this fall.

Scholarship recipients are:

  • Boyd Robertson, of Bethany, has enrolled in Southern Nazarene University, where he will study to earn a Bachelor of Science in nursing with the ultimate goal of a doctorate in nursing to establish a private practice to work with veterans and first responders.

  • Josie Burns, of Bennington, will attend Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, where she will study to develop a career in equine assistant therapy by pursuing a degree in psychology.

  • Charles Brady IV, of Ardmore, will attend Oklahoma University to pursue a career in Audiology. Charles was the drum major of the Ardmore High School band for two years and plans to try out for that position at OU.

UCO professor awarded grant

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded a $410,515 research enhancement grant to University of Central Oklahoma faculty member Emily Hendryx, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Science at UCO.

The grant, “Summarizing Cardiac Data: An Automated Approach for Identifying Representative Heartbeats in the Clinical Setting,” will be used to advance electrocardiogram (ECG) technology for pediatric patients.
