Oklahoma City police shoot, injure man they say opened fire first

An Oklahoma City police officer shot and injured a man authorities said opened fire first Tuesday morning in a northwest Oklahoma City neighborhood.

Police said the unidentified man, who was taken to a local hospital, fired at officers responding to a complaint about him being an unwelcome visitor at a home in the 1400 block of NW 129 Terrace. The man's condition and the extent of his injuries were unknown as of Tuesday afternoon.

Police did not identify the officer who fired the shot.

Oklahoma City Police Lt. Valerie Littlejohn said police were called to the home near the intersection of Memorial Road and Western Avenue at 10:21 a.m. by the person who lived at the home.

That woman told officers the man, whom she identified as a former acquaintance, was on her front porch and possibly armed with a pistol. The woman was not home at the time, but was alerted to his presence through a home security camera, Littlejohn said.

The man, who was still on the home's porch when officers arrived, did not respond to their commands to leave the front porch and explain what was going on, Littlejohn said.

Officers said the man was armed, prompting them to contact the department's tactical squad as they continued to attempt to communicate with the person.

"Because this was in a neighborhood, we wanted to get the tactical team out here to negotiate ... and use its resources to try to get him to surrender safely" and to evacuate nearby neighbors as necessary, she said.

But as tactical officers arrived, the man fired a shot from his weapon, prompting an officer to open fire, Littlejohn said.

It was not clear Tuesday afternoon whether the man shot at an officer, and Littlejohn provided no information about how many shots the officer fired.

"That's all under investigation. We are going to be looking into that. We will interview the officer and have more information" as the review is conducted, Littlejohn said.
