Oklahoma City stores open for Black Friday, and some that are closed
Thanksgiving Thursday also means "Black Friday" shopping deals, a consumer tradition the day after the holiday. But the COVID-19 pandemic caused a shift in how the busy shopping week is now handled, as several major retailers in recent years began closing on Thanksgiving and focusing on online shopping to compete with e-commerce distributor Amazon.
Black Friday has historically been the busiest day in consumer shopping for many years. Mass chain retailers offered promotional deals and discount prices for major electronic and merchandise items, and stores would often open early that day (and sometimes Thanksgiving night) to accommodate the flurry of business that frenzied customers create.
But as more and more business is conducted online, major chains like Walmart and Target have decided to increase the lifespan of their Black Friday deals during the fall. The pandemic also caused many of these same retailers to begin closing for the Thanksgiving holidays, disrupting the customary hours for Black Friday shopping.
Following the success most retailers experienced after shifting to online shopping for Black Friday deals, many have decided to continue closing that Thursday and opening the next day ― with little difference in operation or dent in sales. Recent years have also seen an increased focus on trends like "Small Business Saturday," "Artist Sunday," and "Cyber Monday" in the days immediately following the holiday.
