Oklahoma correctional officer killed by inmate

A correctional officer at the Davis Correctional Facility in Holdenville was attacked and killed by an inmate Sunday, authorities reported.

The attack occurred as inmates were being returned to their housing area from recreation, according to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

Lifesaving efforts by prison medical staff were unsuccessful.

Corrections officials did not immediately identify the officer. The inmate was isolated, the agency said in a release.

The Department of Corrections and local law enforcement were investigating the matter, officials said. Additional details are pending the outcome of the investigation, prison officials said.

The Davis Correctional Facility is a privately operated prison in Holdenville, about 70 miles southeast of Oklahoma City in Hughes County.
