Oklahoma family rescued from sinking boat during powerful storm on Lake Hefner

An Oklahoma City family was rescued from Lake Hefner after their boat sunk during Saturday night's intense storms.

According to the Oklahoma City Police Department, a caller notified officers that their family members, 48-year-old Nikki Ayers, 31-year-old Marquiest Ayers, and 57-year-old Ronney Broussard, were stranded on a boat in the middle of the lake during a weather event with strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning.

The family of three was fishing on their boat before the storms hit and their boat lost power, causing it to sink.

Officers drove around the lake and located the family hanging onto the tip of their boat, barely above the water, without life jackets. After getting to shore, they received treatment from firefighters and EMSA.

According to MSgt. Kendall Smith with the Oklahoma City Police Department, if boaters are caught in a severe storm with big waves, they should be familiar with maneuvering their boat in those conditions.

Boaters are also advised to check weather forecasts and wind conditions before heading onto the water.

The US Coast Guard also requires that everyone on a boat should have a life jacket in good working condition and fits them correctly.
